Years Served: 1961 & 62…I was on the sonar stack when we gained contact with B59. He tried tricking us sitting still, I was ordered to send by CW key: India-Delta-Kelo-Alpha with no response Gunners Mate Lee Boyer was ordered to drop hand grenades (3) over the side. I detected Doppler, he was on the way up, soon radar had him on the surface.

Years Served: 1961-63…Served as CIC Officer/ASW Air Control Officer during Cuban Missile Crisis and subsequent blockade. Great thrill in forcing Russian sub to the surface and escorting him away from the area. Spent a LOT of time in GITMO and environs

I was a signalman and remember the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban blockade when we surfaced the Russian sub..Seemed like we spent more time around Cuba than D&S piers with shakedown cruises and everything.

I was in the deck gang on 1968. To 1969 west-PAC cruise I sleeped forward
My job was to drive the ship
I remembered when we were on water rations for about 18 days
One of our boilers went I think. Wow couldn’t take full bath I think we hooked up a garden hose and bathed
I remember we were anchored off the coast of vet nam and swift boat came out to us and a father and son saw each on our ship for about all day

1964-1966 Sonar Tech E4. One Med cruise. The ship took up station off cypress for evacuation purposes as needed. I was assigned to a landing party and given instruction on how to use a BAR. Boy, glad we never had to land. We encountered a hurricane our way home and had to put in at Rosie Rhodes, PR. Seemed that we spent way too much time in and out of Gitmo. I was in the gun director with torpedoman Gurrero and Lt Fant with Lt Melampy (all great guys) below us and just above the bridge for 1AA. We went into the yards at Portsmouth for overhaul. John Daly, E6 was the sonar lead. while at Portsmouth, Senior Sonar Chief Talty came aboard. Life became a bit easier. The entire USS Waller experience was unforgettable and rests squarely in the plus column for me.
