She was a great ship and prettier than the ones today.....
Bob McGee
Years Served: 1944-46
I am Bob's daughter and he doesn't have a computer but he would love to hear from anyone who served on the Philip when he did. One of his shipmates was June Thatcher who turned out to be a West Monroe LA (where Bob raised his family) native and best friend to this day.
MIKE HACKNEY
Years Served: 1962-1965
You know, the older I get the better the memories I have of the years I spent on the USS Phillip. No longer can I readily remember duty days...standing watch...loading stores...chipping paint...painting...chipping paint...etc. What I do remember is the friends I made, the places we went, the girls who were in port, the girls in Japan and Taiwan, gunnery practice, cheap beer and cigarettes, and being lucky enough to work in one of the few air conditioned spaces on the ship. These are a few of the things I remember

Years Served: 1955-1957
Have fond memories of the time served aboard the ship. Was a Boiler Tender and member of the Forward Damage Control Group. I'm still in touch with two shipmates but looking for others who served during 1955-1957.
Manuel Quintanar jr.
Years Served: 1952-1956
I am Manuel A. Quintanar III, Son of Manuel Quintanar who served on the phillips 498 during the Korean War. Unfortunately Dad passed away in 2000, July 19th of, and we were unaware of this web page during his life. If anyone who served with Dad reads this and knew Dad would like to hear from you. You'll already know, Dad was a Qtr Mstr signalman; talked about a shipmate named Sullivan; who he spoke about over the years. Dad would of been 75 this September 21.
Best Regards,
MAQ III

Years Served: 1968-69
First ship of my 1 hitch career. I got nicknamed Satch and that stuck for the rest of those years on two other tin cans. Survived the great Philip/Fletcher crew swap.
Would like to hear from the R Division folks-all the fresh air snipes.
Remember Captain Danis, Chief's Dean, Wallace, and Mitchell? The second class gunners mate-Smith-who could do the XO's voice announcing the roach coach? Ah, the good old days.
In all histories I've found of the Philip, the last cruise (1968-69) is left out. Anybody else notice that? I was high-lined aboard in December '68 and I think we returned to Pearl in Feb. of '69, bouncing off the landing at Mary's Point. That was also the cruise we came under fire. It was in January. Someone from the crew wrote an account of that incident, but I haven't been able to find it again. Anyone know about it?
Hope to hear from someone!
Retired and full time on the road RVers.
Years Served: 1967-68
Missed all the dates in the previous posting by a year Trying to stay young I guess. I was aboard late 67 to the crew swap in '68.
Michael Morrissey
Years Served: (Have not, grandfather in World War 2, beyond)
I was wondering if any of you have the roster of the Phillip during World War 2 or beyond, because right now i am looking into my family military history. All i know is that he possibly served on the Philip, although I am sure it is. Any help would be great! If you could, email me at mpmorrissey2006@yahoo.com
Phil Wuerstle
Years Served: Feb 68- Sep 68
Came aboard in Subic Feb 69 as ship was just returning from WestPac and returning to Pearl Harbor. Was an ETR2 but had never seen a piece of radar equipment except in A school. Relied on ETN2 Edmonds to help fill up my wheel book. Took over the Leading ET slot when Edmonds got out early before we left for WestPac Nov 68. Made half of the cruise before I got a chance to get out eary upon our return to Subic in Jan 69 after we spent the holidays out in the Tonkin Gulf. I remember a lot of faces but not too many names from the Philip/Fletcher days. I've been working at Vandenberg AFB on the central coast of CA for 31 years now and hope to retire soon. Would like to hear from any former shipmates.

Went aboard Oct 63. Shipped Over in Oct 66 and left for “B” School in Nov 66. Worked in the Forward Fireroom. I gave Blinkey Boyer his name. Sailed with a great bunch. Red Pickard, Floyd Quahano,, Red Medlin, Luther Owens. Too many more to name. Philip had the fastest feet in the Pineapple Fleet. 34. knots, no smoke.
Denny Finck 1960 – 1962
My father, Eugene F. List of Green Bay, Wisconsin served aboard from May 1943 to September 1944. Torpedoman. Through all the central and northern Solomons invasions, plus invasions of Saipan & Tinian. Told stories of falling asleep standing up on the bridge after 72 hours at General Quarters under constant air attack. Another of aerial bombs from two Japanese dive bombers crisscrossing overhead at the same time and narrowly missing the ship. He was proud of his service and passed in September 2004.

The Philip is listed in at least five and growing locations for agent orange exposure. If anyone has any of the conditions they list better fill out VA, VFW, etc applications.
