My father Johnny f Hobbs passed away last year. He served on the renshaw during WWII. He was injured when the ship took a torpedo. If anyone remebers him I would love to hear from you. My email is harry1051@aol.com

Charles Gonzalez
Years Served: 1942 - 1946
I am signing for my father Charlie who passed away April 11, 2004. He worked in the Aft Fire Room aboard Renshaw. His rank at discharge on Feb. 2, 1946 was MM2c. He traded rank for rank 3 months before the Renshaw was torpedoed in Feb. 1945. I and my sister would not be here if he had not done so. We have connected with many who served with my father and in his last years was comforted by this. We are so very proud of all the men aboard Renshaw and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. Bob Chaney
Years Served: Career 25+
I'm proud to sign this guestbook for my late father, GMGC Chief Bob Chaney, who passes away from a massive heart attack on August 23rd, 1989. Dad served on the Philips DD-498 and the Renshaw DD-499, among other shore assignments such as Shore Patrol at Millington in Memphis. We lived in San Diego, Pearl City in Hawaii and Tennesee during the time I can recall. I was born while he was in Pearl Harbor aboard the Renshaw. I remember Dad was a Gunner's Mate and I was aboard many times with him, a couple of times on dependent's cruises and actually watched him shoot the balloons out of the sky and hit the floating targets. I was so proud of him.
Those of you who knew him will remember he was a BIG man. Not many wanted to mess with my father. Though none would, he was such an easy going friendly fellow. I don't guess I ever remember him fighting or anything like that. I just know he had alot of friends from the ships that helped him drink alot of Primo Beer back in the day. I remember waking up on Saturday to watch cartoons and there would be half a dozen sailors still passed out or asleep all over the house. We would have big bar-b-ques and feed them and they were generally all happy just to get off the ship, there was never a problem I can remember.
Dad, for awhile managed the Block Arena or at least that is what I remember it being called. It was a bar/restaurant on base and they had entertainment and the such there. I sang a couple of times on some nights that they had a free singing night .... i was never any good, but the sailors and their wives would put dollars and change in a jar they put out for me... I thought I was a big shot anyway.
Oh, well, I will stop the rambling and hope that someone here will read this and recall spending time at the Chaney house and have good memories of my father, Chief Bob Chaney and let me know any recollections you have of him. My email is bobciii57@centurytel.com, I'm his son Bobby, I'm about to retire from 30 years as a Communications Officer for the Missouri State Highway Patrol. I spent three years in the Army prior to that. I have a wife, Christy, two sons, Dustin 25 and Andrew 24 (about to go into the Navy on the 28th of August, 2008 as an Avionics Tech), two daughters, Allison 13 and Lindsey 7. I sure hope to hear from some of you about Dad. GOD Bless you all and thanks for your contribution to the safety and strength of our country. I salute you ALL!

I am sorry if I am using the wrong forum for this message but I am experiencing trouble signing in.

My father, J. C. Pappy Gay is critically ill and is in the Memphis VA, 1032 Jefferson Ave, Memphis Ave., Memphis, TN 38104. His room number is 522, bed 1. He is not capable of taking phone calls. He will soon be moved to a nursing home facility near his home in AR. His doctors have been preparing him for the inevitable which could be in one week or up to four weeks.
