The Twining was my favorite ship. I was a BM3 and on the decommissioning crew. I came off a WesPac cruise on another tin can, USS John W. Thomason (DD760) and sent here after the Thomason was decommissioned. Twining was a reserve trainer when I was on board, stationed at Treasure Island.

I was part of the regular crew. We traveled up and down the West Coast of the U.S. and also made stops in Mexico and British Columbia. She was a reserve trainer.

Great Stuff, the shipped went to and stopped in at every small port and festival on the West Coast. Great time for a single man!! Great crew and the legacy left created by earlier crews remained to the end.

Twining was my first assignment after receiving my commission while attached to USS Laws DD558. We were able to put a couple of Red E's on the stack while I was the Engineering Officer. A truly great assignment during my 25 year career that I well always cherish. Ben LaTorra LCDR,USN,RET.

I am reviewing my career from the first ship (USS Twining DD540) ETN3 to (USS Joseph Daniels) LT(jg). It was a grand time starting with the Twining. Contact me if you were aboard during that time.

William (Bill) Hansen
Years Served: 1964 to 1965
I have fond memories of the USS Twining at TI. I was transferred to the Twining when it replaced USS Laws. I was an SNRM at the time and I liked having the run of the ship as I carried the radio message board about the ship looking for signatures. I was so disappointed when I received orders to Morse code school instead of making the 2-week cruise to Pearl Harbor. Later in 1965 I transferred to NARTU Alameda and served 3 years active duty and another 3 years as a weekend warrior with VR-873 at Alameda as an Aviation Electrician Mate second class. I would like to hear from shipmate Bill Trabbuco GMG3 of San Francisco.
