I worked as a Damage Control striker for Petty Officer Peppers, made third class on board ship, 2nd class in Reserves after getting off active duty. Made one trip to Vietnam. Got out of the Navy in 1967, joined the Los Angeles Fire Department and spent 40 years reaching the position of Captain II. Retired at the end of 2007. Hope all my shipmates that are still alive, are in good health.

I was a RM2 and made two West-Pac cruises on the Boyd. I believe I remember Bill Sprague (see above) slinging hash for the boys and another cook who was the designated rescue swimmer, complete with knife in teeth! Can't remember his name. My best buddies were Jim Lolkus (RM2) and who now lives in Minnesota (again) and Ken Hoadley (IC2). I have lived in Singapore since 1986 and have grandchildren here. Virtually my whole navy experience was spend aboard Boyd. What a great 2100 Tin Can. In the end, the navy nuked it. Rest In Peace.

Regards to all who served on this worthy and speedy ship. Does anyone remember the high speed run we did off Vietnam (probably 1967 WESTPAC cruise) where we outran a cruiser and another, newer, destroyer? Fun time!
Best to all my shipmates.

Hello to the Boyd crew.
I served as a RDT, coming aboard in June or early July 1959 from Electronics school at Great Lakes and Radar School in Norfork. I left the Boyd and Navy (physically) as RDT2.
The Boyd was a great ship and provided us well. I have e-mail contact with a couple other radarmen and have lost contact with several others.
When I heard that the Boyd had been given to the Turkey Navy in 1969, I wasn't real happy, but she served them well and extended her career another ten years. Not too bad for a 38 year old ship that had many miles under her keel.
May you have smooth sailing ahead ---

I served as a EM3 when I was discharged in San Diego in Sept of 57. I returned to the farm in N.Dak. and continue to farm until a few years ago. I would not have traded my experience in the Navy for anything and my time on the Boyd was mostly good--except for the storms. I meet with so many people I still think of today--I saw cities and sights I never would have had the chance to experience without this time in the navy.

After defeating my sea-sickness, I enjoyed my tour of duty on the BOYD. I was saddened to hear of her decommissioning. The few WesPac cruises bring back many memories. My favorite times was Carrier Escort in the Taiwan Straites and liberty in Sasebo, Japan. Also enjoyed Yokosuka, at the Seaman's Club. :) :) Many memories.........

I am proud to have served on the Boyd for 21/2 years during the Korean War. I went on to become as college professor of history after my discharge from the navy and taught history for forty-five years. Focusing especially on Catholic history, I have written three books and contributed about forty-five contributions to other books, received knighthood from the King of Spain honoring my work, and wrote an essay for Pope John Paul II, for which I received a papal medallion for that effort. My wife is a retired teacher of special education of Hispanic heritage, and we have a son, a daughter and five grandchildren. I earned my B.A. in history from Chico State College in California, my M.A. in history from the Jesuit Santa Clara University, and my Ph.D. in history from the University of New Mexico.

Served aboard Boyd in 67-68 as the ship “doc”. Great time and great crew. Was an HM1 aboard Boyd, made Chief three years later than commissioned in 72. Retired in 85 as a LCDR and credit my time learning about the “real” navy, destroyermen for helping me get my commission. Bests to all Boyd shipmates.
