Years Served: 1967-1970…Spent many a day on a good ship. I do have many memories from those days aboard the Shields. I was even awarded the Mikey Mouse award for trying to weld lockers to the deck in the berthing compartment, over the fuel tanks which were full. HT-1 Jones nominated me for the award. That only nails home the point that Signalman should not try to weld and Hull Tech’s should not try to send flashing light.

Years Served: 1957-1960…After completing FT School in San Diego in ‘56-57, I reported aboard the USS Shields in Mare Island! When we went under the Golden Gate Bridge into the open sea and put the pedal to the metal to check out the ship’s new engines, I wondered what this good ’ole farm boy had done!!:)
