Years Served: ‘56-’60…I’m signing this guestbook on behalf of my father, Richard Rick Yaeckel who was, to the best of my knowledge, an EM4 or an EM3. Dad is in hospice care and will be with us only shortly, just days at this point. My father related many stories to me about his time on the Sperry. Stories of a cook from NYC who would spit on the grill to see if it was hot enough to cook dad steak and eggs early on a Sunday morning or getting ice cream made for him in return for hooking up a fan over someones bunk to keep them cool when they slept. I have a pic of my dad with a sailors hat on peeking his head over a wall. We also uncovered some old slides from his time on ship when we were emptying out the house.

Years Served: 8/58 – 7/60…This was my 1st of many ships that I served on, and the only one, that I enjoyed being on; I came aboard as a RMSA, and left as a RM3; Cdr Roy E. Burton, Jr. was the C.O. and a very fine man; I still contact with a few shipmates from those days, and will always consider them to be my friends.

Years Served: 1955-57…Wonder if anyone remembers me. I was the IC3 who kept the gyro-compass from tumbling and the phone systems working. And I was the guy who ran the movies on the fantail when we were at sea and gave private showings in the IC shack for the mess cooks and the officer stewards. They always brought a few steaks to be grilled on my small burner. Did I mentioned that me and a couple of others had a raison-jack still on the 01 deck in one of the radar closets.
