The Gainard was my first assignment out of boot camp,reported on board in Jan.of 1963 at Newport,R.I. and served about 8 months before being transfered to the west coast{San Diego} notable expierence was us and our sister ship were part of looking for survivors of the U.S.S. Thresher tragedy.And also remember Cape Haderas which needs no explanation.I was a non designated striker,and ended in 'M' division..eventualy made 2ndclass Machinist Mate.and was discharged at T.I. in San Francisco in Oct of 1966...shipmates that remember me please e-mail and we all know the difference between a sea story and a fairy tale ... :D
