Years Served: 1961-62…I SERVED WITH CAPT. KELLEY, WE WENT ON A CRUISE TO WEST AFRICA, SOLANT AMITY CRUISE. WE CROSSED THE EQUATOR AT THE CENTER OF THE THE EARTH AND BECAME GOLDEN SHELLBACKS.WE STOPPED IN PORTS ON THE WAY DOWN TO CAPETOWN. THEN WE PLAYED WAR GAMES WITH SHIPS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE.
Years Served: 1981-1982…I was a fresh bootcamp when I reported to the Sherman. I knew soon after I reported aboard her I would stay in the Navy. She was a beautiful ship and still is. I had an great time in deck division. Made my first deploymet on her. I did stay in for 20 yrs and it was because of her.
Served in OI division from 1979-1981.
The Forrest Sherman was a great command. If that crew could have all remained together, all would have served their 20. So much comraderie. Re-upped with Bob Woods. Made Captain AJ Booth climb to the SPS48 radar to swear us in.
I think that my experience as a young man aboard Forrest Sherman shaped my life. I can still remember so much, like it was yesterday but its been 40 years since I left. I can remember the sound of watertight doors closing. I remember my OI division shipmates. The crowded sleeping compartment. A world far away but still close.
