I came to the Towers in 64 while she was in drydock at Hunters Point as a CT2 who had lost my security clearance because I had requested to marry a Japanese woman. I became an SK and served on Towers until Oct. 67, making two WestPac cruises to Vietnam. The leading SK chief at the time was Skidmore and J.D. Minas, who made SK1 the same time I did, was a plank owner on Towers and my buddy while we served together. We served with a lot of great guys and the Supply Department was a tight knit group who managed to keep their spirits high even under the stress of long stretches at sea. I especially remember the time we spent shelling targets from the Saigon River for hours on end a 5 inch round every two minutes, day and night. So sorry she came to such an ignoble end as a Sinkex target, but even then she showed just how tough she truly was. Still considered by me as one of the slickest looking ships of the fleet. Like to hear from any of my old shipmates. By the way, I’m still married to my sweet Japanese wife these 54 years later. I got out of the Navy after 8 years and we moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 67. We live in South New Jersey now and still think about my time on Towers, wish all shipmates from all eras the best of luck and happy memories.
