I SERVED ON THE GILMORE IN KEY WEST FROM JULY 1951
TO MAY OR JUNE 1954.

RICHRD WASOSKI PN2 USN

My Dad and uncle both served on the Gilmore. My Dad was Raymond Earl Griffin and my uncle was Lonnie Bell Griffin.

Served on the last crew. Was there when they chopped her mast and towed her away to the boneyard. Sad day. I left my decom crew certificate in the “H” bit on the fantail where the XO caught the bitter end. Nice man. He used to serve us hamburgers and cheeseburgers in the hamburger line. He didn’t even have to be there that day. I may have been the last one to look him in the eyes after he had been slammed down on the deck a few feet away by that busted nylon line (rubber band). What a gash ……. MEDIC! I was # 1 lineman on the rope that broke. First day on the job, still in “I” division. “All ahead two thirds!” Damned anchor buoy. Damned storm. Damned too little tugs.

Came in December after the Barcelona cruise but just in time for the Genoa cruise.(The one that got the XO) Went on the Naples cruise and helped tear up the Piano Bar when those army guys got smart. Returned to St. Stevens and pulled up alongside our replacement, the Orion. When I found out my friend from home wasn’t on board I didn’t cross deck and brought the Gilmore home on her last cruise across the North Atlantic. The stuff that didn’t get deep sixxed along the way.

A shout out to David Reed, (Joe) Pat Walsh, Buoy Head, and all the rest of Deck II division

I was.stationed aboard the Gilmore from 79-80. Was an MS3 worked as supply PO in S-2 div. Worked for a short time in the galley as.night cook. Stayed in town in an apartment. Was fun times went to Barcelona, and Genoa. I stayed behind for the Naples cruise. Got stranded on the liberty boat for 19hrs. when it went into the rocks from a strong wind gust. Navy seals had to swim the lines to us cause we were too far.into the rocks for.tugs.to get.us out. Was a sad day when we lost.our XO to a freak accident. Got to ride her back to the states to decommission 5.
