Boarded USS FDR (CVA42). Not CVS etc
December 07, 1960. Marine detachment replacements
Pfc to Cpl
Busted
1: firing 45 off in passageways. Wo no one hurt
2: fired (5-11 round -Marine unit) exploded across areas of destroyer , breaking all windows in decks where officers controlled ship and / can’t remember what they were called). Why it exploded is mystery as it could shoot 10-20 miles Why it was 20-25 feet from our guns was mystery. Usually man overboard. Navy kept all 4 destroyers in PORT SIDE. NAVY concerned we did it on purpose. Usually 2 each side. Port starboard for & aft
Anyone recall that. Lost 2 stripes for that error.
Off ship April 1963 after 2-3 Med Cruise dripping off Marines to 2nd marines ( Cuban. Invasion ). Right BUT WE WERE READY. I DIDNT GO AS INLY ONE W/experiences in MED. A lot of protocol. I knew it
Capt Wahfeld USMC. NAVY CAPT ( ?) hated marines and me. Wouldn’t let him in nuclear area as he didn’t have ID BADGE. HIS ORDER. He was pissed. Marine guard returned him to get but never came back.

First aboard on operation Snowy Beach January 1972, with VF-84, then the 72" med cruise TAD to S1 Div. supply runner, then S3 Div. on breakout crew for small stores, then back to S1 again as a runner, 10 months of fun, did not go back aboard till 1975, then returned to U.S.A. last day we were in Palma Spain, March 29, remember riding back to the ship in the last liberty launch on night in Palma in 1972, learned to never catch those late boats, to many fights and sailors heaving up. otherwise it was an adventure.

1959 1961 V-1 Division Looking at other messages only one I remember is Yellow Shirt Chester Hiestand. I was a Blue Shirt ran the forward crew. and took care of the forward gear locker. That was where the coffee was. Remember Chief Spicer. Played a little poker with him. Served two Med Cruises with Chester.
