Years Served: 1976 – Decom…My first ship! Served in OI Division. Made the last Med cruise and right up to decommissioning before transferring to pre-com Oliver Hazard Perry. Collision in Straits of Messina was interesting to someone new to the ship, but got us another 3 weeks in Naples :)
Years Served: 1962-1965…I served in W Division during my tour. Two Med cruises and six weeks in Gtmo. Lots of great memories.
Years Served: 1970-71…I had the pleasure of serving during 2 Med cruises as a junior officer in the communications dept.; many good memories of Barcelona, Palma, Athens, Trieste.
Years Served: 1962 to 1964…I served aboard FDR from March 1962 to March 1964 as EM1 and EMC in charge of Lighting shop and then Leading Chief. The duty and people were all good except for the ship being gone for long periods of time. My second son was born in November 1962 during the Cuban crisis when we were in the Med and it took five days to be informed due to radio silence. I didn’t see him until we returned from the Med in April 1963 five and a half months old. I eventually went to the USS Intrepid, USS Pocono and retired off of the vUSS Forrestal in January 1973 as a Master Chief.
Just leaving my E/mail address daltonvf84@yahoo.com , I was TAD to S-1 and S-3 in 1972, and worked with AK2 Jimmy Austin in 1975 till end od March when I was sent back to Philly for discharge.
