The Twining was my favorite ship. I was a BM3 and on the decommissioning crew. I came off a WesPac cruise on another tin can, USS John W. Thomason (DD760) and sent here after the Thomason was decommissioned. Twining was a reserve trainer when I was on board, stationed at Treasure Island.
I was part of the regular crew. We traveled up and down the West Coast of the U.S. and also made stops in Mexico and British Columbia. She was a reserve trainer.
Great Stuff, the shipped went to and stopped in at every small port and festival on the West Coast. Great time for a single man!! Great crew and the legacy left created by earlier crews remained to the end.

Twining was my first assignment after receiving my commission while attached to USS Laws DD558. We were able to put a couple of Red E's on the stack while I was the Engineering Officer. A truly great assignment during my 25 year career that I well always cherish. Ben LaTorra LCDR,USN,RET.

I am reviewing my career from the first ship (USS Twining DD540) ETN3 to (USS Joseph Daniels) LT(jg). It was a grand time starting with the Twining. Contact me if you were aboard during that time.
William (Bill) Hansen
Years Served: 1964 to 1965
I have fond memories of the USS Twining at TI. I was transferred to the Twining when it replaced USS Laws. I was an SNRM at the time and I liked having the run of the ship as I carried the radio message board about the ship looking for signatures. I was so disappointed when I received orders to Morse code school instead of making the 2-week cruise to Pearl Harbor. Later in 1965 I transferred to NARTU Alameda and served 3 years active duty and another 3 years as a weekend warrior with VR-873 at Alameda as an Aviation Electrician Mate second class. I would like to hear from shipmate Bill Trabbuco GMG3 of San Francisco.

My father in law was a plank owner on the twinning. Oh the stories he would tell!
I joined the crew of USS TWINING in December 1970 as RM3. Thanks to Admiral Zumwalt, who gave an early discharge if serving on a ship that is decommissioned and you had less than a year on your enlistment on the date of decommissioning. Upon decommissioning in July 1971, I received a 362 day early discharge.
Went aboard in 1966 … most memorable port visit was the Canadian Navy port of Esquimalt (Vancouver Island). Canadian sailors were great hosts. I left for RM-B school in 1968. Not sure of the months. Was RM1 at the time. Ron Martin, CWO, USN (Ret)
Went aboard USS Twining 1971 as a Shipfitter E3 fresh from A School and Welding School. Only non petty officer in A Gang. Treasure Island,San Francisco
My father, John R. Kirkland, served on the USS Twining during the Korean War. What I’d give to hear another one of his stories. He passed away in 2005. Thank you to everyone for your service! 🇺🇸 ⚓️
Looking for any information on a crew member named Donald Stevens. Was on Twinning during the Korean War. Tried To get records but so far nothing.
My Dad, CFC Floyd H. Woods, was a Twining plank owner and served aboard her until her return Stateside after the Japanese surrender. He loved that ship and got a big kick out of attending reunions.
Stationed on board 1967-1968 after leaving Adak, AK duty. Etn2 last duty station as were many onboard. Same story about bridge keel, Russian trawler ( took my film of same and returned slides almost 1 year later less pics of trawler) and a starboard gash in aft crew quarters adjacent to my bunk. Old girl was pretty worn out in ’67 but still managed to train weekend warriers and go to sea.
In 1970 what month and where did the Twining go for its 2 week reserve cruse?
I was on the Twining, it as a reserve ship Treasure Island, San Francisco 1967-68; on the deck force. December 67 we were ordered to follow a Russian ship off of Oregon coast. A storm struck us with waves as high as the radar
mast and gunal to gunal. Had crack in the aft berthing. Fun time mess cooking. Only had 120 crew onboard. Also had 20 feet of skeg ripe loose on the port side; it was cut off when we returned to Treasure Island. Also got the spy ship Pubalo under way. Then I went to corp school & xray school.
.
Respond to Glenn Robbins; my dad was stationed in board sometime in or around 1951. Told me some stories about Wonson Harbor. Was wondering if you might have known him, his name was George Coleman. I’m also working on a project and was wondering if you or anyone else might have some pictures of the ship that you would care to share.
Thank you

My dad served on the twining from 1957 -1961. He is gone now and we know little about his time in the service. His name was Thomas D. Stewart. Anyone with some insight please get in touch. Debi.girvin1959@gmail.com. I used my maiden name as he had it tattooed on his arm when he served.
