Years Served: Aug. 1967-Dec.1968
My tour of duty on the Forrest Sherman was memorable. The crew and officers on board at that time were for the most part very good people. Probably my most memorable experience was when we were in Dry Dock in Boston. One evening I had the Quarterdeck watch and the CDO went to check the dry dock and never came back. He finally returned about 3 months later. Until then I had never heard of an officer going over the hill.
I was in the Sonar Gang on board this ship. My rank was STG-2.

Years Served: 1980 - 1992
I did not serve on board the Sherman. I served in the after-engineroom on board the USS Mullinnix DD-944. I loved my days as a tin can sailor but was too dumb to appreciate it. I served with some of the greatest people in the Navy and wasn't those old 1200 pounders awesome (that is, of course, after we converted to DFM from that ever-loving Black Oil)! I am proud of the fact that you guys have found her a home in Maryland. I plan to visit. Hats off to those who could still stick shift an engineering plant in the dark and aim before they took a shot.

STG2 Lawrence Bell
Years Served: 1968 ti 1973
I boarded the Sherman in the yards at Boston. I remember learning more about the Navy and myself on her than any where else. My first port was Jamacia and I learned a lot there too. I remember our second trip to the yards and the remodeling of the sonar berthing area. I left the Serman to go to the USS Barry to go to Greese.

I was a fresh bootcamp when I reported to the Sherman. I knew soon after I reported aboard her I would stay in the Navy. She was a beautiful ship and still is. I had an great time in deck division. Made my first deploymet on her. I did stay in for 20 yrs and it was because of her.
