Collection: USS Intrepid CV 11

The USS Intrepid (CV-11) was a United States Navy aircraft carrier that served during World War II, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. Commissioned in August 1943, the Intrepid was the fourth vessel of the Essex-class of aircraft carriers, and was named after the word meaning "fearless" or "bold."

The Intrepid was immediately sent into action in the Pacific Theater, where it participated in several major battles including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Okinawa. In the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Intrepid launched numerous airstrikes against Japanese ships and aircraft, contributing to the American victory.

After World War II, the USS Intrepid was decommissioned and later reactivated to serve during the Cold War. The carrier was used for various operations and training exercises, including the Cuban Missile Crisis.

During the Vietnam War, the Intrepid served as an attack carrier, launching airstrikes against North Vietnamese targets in support of United States ground troops and South Vietnamese forces. The carrier's air wing, consisting of fighter and attack aircraft, conducted bombing runs over enemy-held territory, providing air cover for ground troops and destroying enemy supply lines.

The Intrepid's mission in the war was not without challenges. The carrier and its air wing faced intense anti-aircraft fire and missile attacks from the North Vietnamese. The crew also had to contend with the treacherous waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, where the carrier operated. Despite these challenges, the Intrepid and its air wing were able to successfully complete their missions and support ground troops in the region.

The Intrepid's participation in the Vietnam War was not without controversy. Critics of the war argued that the carrier's airstrikes caused unnecessary destruction and civilian casualties. However, supporters of the war effort emphasized the critical role that the Intrepid and other aircraft carriers played in providing air support for ground troops and disrupting enemy supply lines.

The USS Intrepid served a total of three combat tours in Vietnam War, from 1965-1969. The ship and its crew were awarded multiple battle stars for their service in the conflict. The Intrepid was eventually decommissioned in 1974, after 31 years of service to the United States Navy.

The USS Intrepid was a formidable vessel, known for its versatility and striking power. The sailors and aviators who served on board the Intrepid demonstrated incredible courage and skill in the face of adversity. Their contributions to the war effort were instrumental in securing victory for the United States and the Allied powers.

The USS Intrepid may no longer be with us, but its legacy lives on. Today, the Intrepid is a museum ship located in the Hudson River in New York City, open for visiting and it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women of the United States Navy in defense of freedom and democracy. And it will always be remembered as one of the most iconic and successful aircraft carriers in American history.
