Years Served: 1957-1962…I am signing on behalf of my father Alfred Gunselman who passed away June 2009. My father was a machinist mate on the USS Charles S Sperry 697 and in the US Navy from 1957-1962. He was a machinist mate on the USS MCCaffrey also. I never had the opportunity to meet my father, although I was able to attend his burial as someone located me to let me know. If any of you could share information on my father or times shared, I would truly be grateful. I always wanted to know him and meet him.

1959, PN3. Rick Yeckel, I remember your dad. The cooks name was Hickey, and he was a character right out of New York. Sorry to learn of your dad’s health problems. Sperry was a great ship.

I was a BT3 in B-Division aboard the USS Charles S. Sperry DD-697. I served with some great guys, and remained in contact with several all through the years. Going to our annual reunions from 2005 to today, in 2021, I’ve been able to reconnect with many shipmates that I served with and become friends with many that served before me. We really have a great time at our reunions. I’m currently the webmaster and reunion coordinator of the USS Charles S. Sperry DD-697 Association. We do have a website, and Facebook pages, for all who wish to reconnect with shipmates, and we do have quarterly newsletters.
