After 2 weeks in Boot Camp at Great Lakes, I was assigned two weeks aboard the USS Hank DD 702 in the After Engine Room painting down to the Bilge line. At the time I was a Machinist Mate Striker. My bunk was in the After Engine Room compartment: top bunk with the steam pipe. I had to climb out to turn over. I was a two by six at the time looking at two years active. Before starting Active Duty I switched Rates and served 8 years as a Hospital Corpsman. RAD as HM2. Later in the Reserves I made HM1. After reading the History of the Hank, I am sorry I didn’t understand her not gave her the Respect she earned! My time on board were the first two weeks in December 1970.
