Years Served: 1965-1968…I served as Fire Control Technician from 1966 to 1968.
Years Served: 1962-1963…Great new guest book!
Years Served: 1960-1964…YEOMAN
I served on Hank 9/71-5/72. I was an EM3 on TAD awaiting nuclear power school, but received 2 extensions, so spent about 9 months instead of the few weeks originally assigned. Enjoyed my time onboard & often “went steaming” with EN, MM & BT types.
Received a LOT of in-rate experience that served me well throughout life. I enjoyed the camaderie of the small ships company, & knew most shipmates by first name. BUPERS denied my 3rd extension to stay on Hank, sending me on to “nuke school” in Bainbridge MD, about an hour S of PHL, so I returned to visit from time to time.
Never enjoyed times in USN as I did aboard Hank.
Came onboard as a very young SN. Hank was my Reserve ship out of Philadelphia NSY 1965-1967. Then spent 2 weeks in boot camp and on to my first ship (DD-858), attained DK3, and later transferred to DDE/FF-1038. Finished with 2 more years as reserve, reporting to monthly drills.
