Years Served: 21…I was looking at the pictures of the Barton in 1966. I joined the Navy reserves my Junior Year in High School and served two weeks on the Barton the summer of 1966. I was a little ole E-1 Electricians Mate Striker, well I must have been a little smart ass and as you know the EM locker was at the MM Shop, Well a 3rd class EM didn’t care much for me, so when we were not out working on motors, I was down in that bilge in the MM shop, scrubbing and cleaning, I’ll tell you by the end of those two weeks you could have eaten off the floor of that old bilge. Other than boot-camp that was my first experience with the Navy. Well about two months before I was to go on my two year Navy Duty, I realized I didn’t care much about being on a ship and Found out about the Navy Seabees and Joined the Seabees as Regular Navy, well after 21 years with that ole canoe Club, I have been retired now for 22. Thank you shipmates, you made a lifetime impression on me and you served the Fleet well. Sincerely, CECS Ray Heid USN Ret
